Greater Sacramento and South Central Coast COE Directors Deliver Keynote at Education Conference
Directors from the South Central Coast and Greater Sacramento Centers of Excellence (COE) presented the keynote address during the conclusion of the Educating for Careers Conference in Sacramento in March.
Ebony J. Benzing, Greater Sacramento COE director, and Jacob Poore, South Central Coast COE director, delivered the presentation, “California’s Labor Market in 10 Years: Which Jobs Will Be in Demand in 2035?”
Benzing and Poore presented an analysis examining past-and-present trends affecting California’s labor market outlook over the next 10 years.
The directors stressed the importance of equipping students with transferable skills that can be applied to multiple sectors which can help them withstand future recessions or other labor market shocks, should they occur.
Key findings included:
- Advanced Manufacturing–A rise in automation is expected to cause workforce reductions, with some job opportunities in more specialized areas, such as robotics and precision manufacturing.
- Health–The sector continues to fuel state employment and offers an abundance of high-skill, high-wage jobs with clear career ladders and low automation and AI risk.
- ICT/Digital Media–Due to the state’s increased investment in film and television and a strong start-up ecosystem, California remains a global innovation hub despite the sector’s heavy exposure to AI.
- Retail, Hospitality, and Tourism–Upcoming international events, including the World Cup and the Olympics, are likely to draw more visitors to California and create short-term workforce demand in the sector, one of the state’s major sources of employment.
